Turn agent skills on and off

Updated Oct 8, 20263 min read

Quick answer

To turn on a skill:

  1. Open your agent from Agents and select Skills.
  2. Choose a skill from Skill pages.
  3. Turn its switch on.
  4. Check How it works for any setup it needs.

Out of the box, a Cypher V agent answers questions. Skills let it do more during and after a call: book appointments, take payments, write notes and queue follow-ups. Each skill connects the agent to another Cypher LM product, so you turn on only what your business needs.

Turn a skill on

  1. Go to Agents and open the agent.
  2. Select Skills. The Overview page shows every skill and whether it's on.
  3. Open the skill from the Skill pages menu, for example Note taker.
  4. Turn on the switch. For the note taker, the switch reads Take notes on this agent's calls. and you'll see Note taker turned on.
  5. Read How it works and What you'll see on the skill's page. Some skills need setup first.

Setup each skill needs

  • Book meetings needs at least one appointment type and your hours. See Appointment types and Set your availability.
  • Take payments needs Stripe or bank and wallet details in Cypher P › Settings. See Payments overview.
  • Note taker works straight away. Recaps appear in the agent's call log and in Notes, and are emailed to you.
  • Outbound calls reach customers by a personal call link until a phone number is connected. See Outbound calls and campaigns.

You can also turn on booking and payments from Controls › What this agent can do, and from the Bookings and Payments sections. They all change the same setting.

Plans and locked skills

The Basic plan includes the voice agent (Cypher V). Scheduling, notes, copilot and payments come with Premium and the free trial, or as add-ons. If a skill isn't in your plan, turning it on opens a message such as Note taker isn't included in your Basic plan, with Add to my plan, Compare plans and See options.

When the note taker is off or not in your plan, calls still log a full transcript. Only the written summary, key details and recap email are left out.

Which skills to start with

If you're not sure, start small. A receptionist agent for a clinic or salon usually needs only Book meetings and Note taker: callers get booked on the spot, and you get a recap of every call. Add Take payments when you want deposits or booking fees collected during the call, and Follow-ups when your team needs reminders of what was promised. Outbound calls makes sense once you have a list of customers to contact, such as renewals or feedback requests.

After turning a skill on, make a short test call and try it as a customer would, for example by asking to book an appointment next Tuesday. Then check the result in the matching section: Bookings, Cypher P or Notes.

Common questions

Does turning on a skill change my agent's voice or answers?

No. Your agent keeps its name, voice and knowledge. It simply gains the tools for that skill, such as checking your calendar or sending a payment link.
